“Villages of Transylvania” Horse riding vacation

Horseback riding tour:
five days full of trail rides through varied terrain

Riders are invited to join us in an adventure set at the foothills of the Carpathians, a horseback riding tour through more than ten Transylvanian villages guarding the mountain passes, with the whole extent of the proposed horse trails totalling about 125 km.

You are invited to an eight day long riding vacation that includes accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, a full day for preparation, five days of riding, a farewell dinner and a lot of everlasting memories. Riders’ friends or family members that are not passionate about horses and riding can also enjoy a relaxing vacation at our Country Club, a true getaway vacation, far from the crowds and noises of the city. Our offer for non-riders includes a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a tennis court, various hiking trails, a children’s playground or even trips in a horse drawn carriage.

Riding tour schedule

Day 1: Arrival of guests
Arrivals, welcome cocktail, get acquainted with your hosts. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 2: Preparation day for riders
Get acquainted with your horse, warming up in the manege, ride around the Rahau village, 3 hrs, 20km.

Day 3: Riding trail Rahau – Deal – Carpinis – Poiana Sibiului, approx. 4 hrs / 25 km.
We depart right after breakfast towards the Cindrel Mountains, following country roads and forest paths. The horse trails pass through the villages “Deal” (Câlnic commune), Carpiniş, the forrests of Dumbrava then Pitigaia, Dealul Spet.

The riding day ends in “Poiana Sibiului”, where we can visit the “St Archangel Church” on the hill, an architectural and historical monument build entirely out of timber in 1766. In “Poiana” we can also visit the Ethnographic Museum that houses various agricultural and craft tools, woven goods, clothing and furniture typical of shepherds’ dwellings.

Highlights: horseback trekking through the forest, visit to the “St Archangel Church”.

Day 4: Riding trail Poiana Sibiului – Rod – Tilisca – Gales – Saliste-Vale – Sibiel,
approx. 4 hrs / 25 km.

From Poiana Sibiului we ride towards “Rod”, ‘Tilisca”, “Gales” where we can visit the “Barbu Constantin” Ethnographic Museum. The museum has an in door pavilion and several constructions in the garden with an inventory of 1300 pieces. Exhibits include various tools used in farming, sheep breeding, bee-keeping, fruit gathering as well as crafts such as pottery, hat-making, carding, leather-making. Several illustrations of local customs are also on display. Also, one of the most interesting exhibits lies in the garden – an integral tradional Saliste House, with specific interior and a sheep fold from the 19th Century.

The trail will then lead to “Saliste” and “Vale” and the day ends in “Sibiel”, to rest after a day’s ride. In “Saliste” we can visit the Museum of Stained Glass Icons. Set up in 1969 from public donations it houses a valuable collection of stained glass icons from various centers all over Romania. The museum also exhibits wooden icons, peasant ceramics, furniture pieces, home textiles and antique Romanian books.

Highlights: visit the “Barbu Constantin” Ethnographic Museum, visit to the Stained Glass Icons Museum.

Day5 riding route: Sibiel – Fantanele – Cabana Fantanele – Varful Guga Mare – Varful Captanu Mare – Poiana Sibiului, approx. 7 hrs / 37 Km.
Starting at Sibiel we ride through “Fantanele”, toward the “Fantanele” hut. From here, towards the west, we will head to “Pigeon Coast” in order to reach the “Guga Mare” Peak (1388 m altitude). The trail will then follow along the mountain coast to reach the “Captanu Mare” Peak (1229 m altitude), and will continue the descend to the mountain glade and toward the “Black Stream”. After passing under the “Pietriceaua” Peak (1555 m altitude) the fifth day of trail riding ends in “Poiana Sibiului”, in the heart of “Marginimea Sibiului”, an area filled with pastoral traditions.

Highlights: riding across the mountains at 1388m.

Day 6 route: Poiana Sibiului – Dobârca – Gârbova – Reciu – Câlnic – Rahau, approx 6 hrs / 30 Km.
From Poiana Sibiului we will ride through “Dobarca”, towards “Gârbova” where we will enjoy a real culinary feast by trying out traditional cheeses and local well known wines.

After lunch the trail leads toward “Calnic”, where we will visit the Farmers’ Fortress. Built by the Transylvanian Saxons in the 13th Century, the Fortress was the residence of the Saxon Greavs (counts) until the year 1430 when the last descendants of this noble family sold it to the farmers’ community. From Calnic, we will be back to the Country Club in “Rahau”, in time for dinner.

Highlight – cheese and wine lunch in “Garbova”

Day 7: Recovery after riding tour
Relaxation at the Country Club or day-trip to Sibiu, farewell dinner at the Country Club.
Highlights: farewell dinner at “Mesteceni” Country Club.

Day 8: Breakfast and Departure.

Riding vacation checklist and registration

In order to ensure you have the best possible riding vacation with us, we advise you to the following checklist:

  • This offer is mainly for advanced riders
  • The riding vacation “Transylvanian Villages” is available from March to October
  • You shoud bring your own equipment if possible; if not, helmets and boots will be provided for you
  • Riders that would like to ride their own horse should mention in advance

Vacation price

The price for the “Villages of Transylvania” riding vacation is 3240 Lei.
Prices are per person in twin room accommodation and include: accommodation, full board, all local drinks, guide and up to 5 hours riding daily as per trip schedule.
